Jet ski safety tips for beginners
On this page
Most of our guests have never touched a jet ski before they meet us. Fourteen years of teaching beginners has taught us exactly where first-timers go wrong, and it is never what they expect. Here is the short version.
Before you ride
- Take the briefing seriously.Even if you have watched videos. Every machine handles a little differently, and the briefing covers this ski, this water, today.
- Wear the life jacket properly.Zipped and snug. A loose jacket rides up and does nothing.
- Attach the kill-switch lanyard. It clips to your wrist or jacket and cuts the engine if you fall off. No lanyard, no ride.
- Know the age rules.Drivers must be 16 or older, passengers 14 to 16 with an adult. Bring ID. Full details on oursafety academypage.
Throttle control is everything
Beginners treat the throttle like a car accelerator. Do not. A jet ski steers with thrust, which means:
- You need throttle to turn.Release it completely at speed and you lose steering. This surprises everyone once.
- Squeeze, do not yank.Smooth progressive throttle keeps the ski stable. Jerky inputs make it buck.
- Look where you want to go.Your body follows your eyes, and the ski follows your body. Stare at the buoy you want to avoid and you will hit it.
- Start slow, build up.Your guide will open up the speed as you show control. There is no prize for full throttle in the first five minutes.
What to do if you fall off
It happens, usually at low speed in a turn, and it is not a big deal if you know the drill:
- Stay calm and stay with the ski. It floats, and it is easier to spot than a swimmer.
- Climb back on from the rear platform, never the side. The ski is designed for this.
- Check the lanyard is still attached before restarting.
- Signal your guide with a raised hand so they know you are fine.
Your guide practices this with you in the briefing loop before the real ride starts.
Reading the water
- Waves: hit them at 45 degrees.Straight on slams, sideways rolls. Angle in, ease off the throttle at the crest.
- Boat wakes: same rule.Slow down, angle across, then resume.
- Stay out of swim zones. They are marked with buoys for a reason. Fines are real and so are swimmers.
- Watch the wind.Afternoon sea breezes chop up the bay. Mornings are calmer, which is one more reason to take the09:00 slot.
What to wear and bring
- Swimwear and a rash guard if you burn easily. The Gulf sun is serious even at 09:00.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, applied before you arrive.
- A towel and a change of clothes for after. We have showers at the marina.
- Leave valuables at the hotel. We provide dry bags for phones, and our crew takes your photos free.
